Using Ampules, Filter Needles and an Intravenous Solution

The syringe is held with the four finger grip and the needle inserted into the ampule neck. The entire process is done in the laminar flow air.

The ampule is tilted to pool the drug solution in the shoulder of the ampule. The needle is placed bevel down in the shoulder. The solution is withdrawn using the thumb on the plunger end plate and withdrawing the plunger. If the thumb is not long enough to withdrawl the solution into the syringe, the second finger can be used to extend the length of the plunger withdrawl.

Keep the syringe in the laminar flow air.
It is easy to position the syringe by holding it by the barrel with two or three fingers. This keeps the pharmacist from getting his/her hands between the clean laminar flow air from the HEPA filter and the critical sites such as the needle and plunger ribs.
