Using Ampules, Filter Needles and an Intravenous Solution

When the ampule is broken sharp glass shards are produced.

We do not want these glass particles to stick in the HEPA filter, contaminating the filter.

Therefore, the ampule is moved to the side of the hood and broken towards the side wall in the laminar flow air.

Often the breaking of the ampule neck produces a large sharp glass edge that will

easily cut fingers resulting in a contaminated product and bleeding fingers.

Be sure your thumbs are out of the way when cracking the ampule.

Once opened the ampule may be placed in the laminar flow air of the hood.

The needle cover is removed to draw the drug solution from the ampule. Draw the needle cover straight off the needle - do not turn or the needle will come loose from the syringe.
