Using Ampules, Filter Needles and an Intravenous Solution

Ampules should be wiped with sterile 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and sterile wipes

before being brought into the laminar flow work area.

Cleaning with sterile alcohol wipes should include the ampule neck area between the bulb and ampule shoulder where the ampule will break.

The ampule should be opened towards the sidewall of the laminar flow hood.

The ampule shoulder and bulb are grasped with the soft fleshy portions

of the thumbs directly beneath the fingernail beds.

A small, sharp, horizontal flex of the wrists will cause the ampule to crack open.
