Filter Disks

Filter disks are convenient, presterilized filters ready to use with syringes and needles. Filters fall into two general categories - hydrophilic filters (water loving, for polar liquids) used to filter water based pharmaceutical products and hydrophobic filters (water fearing, for nonpolar liquids or gases) used to filter oil based drug products and gases. Pore sizes also vary - 5 micron pores are sufficient for removing glass particles from an ampule but a 0.2 micron pore size is needed to retain bacteria and perform a sterile filtration of a pharmaceutical product.

Sterile filter disks often come in blister packages that should be wiped with sterile alcohol if the package is brought into the laminar flow work area. To open the paper seal is pealed back and temporarily discarded to the side of the hood

Being a sterile device, the open package is placed facing the HEPA filter.

The LuerLok syringe cap is removed from the syringe and the filter disk attached in laminar flow air.
