Using Ampules, Filter Needles and an Intravenous Solution

The filter needle is placed through the center of the rubber intake septum.

The drug solution is injected into the bag taking care so that the needle

does not penetrate the side of the intake tube.

The intravenous solution is slowly shaken by rolling the wrist back and forth.

Vigorous or fast movements in a laminar flow work area are not permitted because these motions cause eddy currents and ruin the cleansing action of the clean laminar flow air.

The compounded intravenous solution must be checked for precipitates, particulates, undesirable color changes, and gas evolution before release to the nurse or patient.
