Using Ampules, Filter Needles and an Intravenous Solution

Once the bag is in the hood it is positioned with the intake septum facing the clean air from the HEPA filter with the label up so that it can be easily identified.

The intake septum is wiped with a sterile alcohol wipe to remove any extraneous particulates. The septum should be wiped in only one direction to push loose particles from the rubber septum to one side.

Any sterile solution withdrawn from an ampule must be filtered.

A filter needle is a sterile needle that contains a 5 micron filter to remove glass particles. To filter the solution in the syringe as it is injected into the intravenous solution bag, the filter needle is attached to the syringe after the regular needle is removed.
