Lab Two
Instructors will review with you the proper preparation of a laminar
flow workbench (LFW) and the proper introduction of supplies into the LFW.
You will prepare the LFW and introduce your supplies into the LFW.
Review with your instructor the proper aseptic handling of a hypodermic needle and syringe. (S-1, N-1)
You will withdraw, aseptically, 6 mL of solution from an ampul and filter the solution through an appropriate filter into a large volume parenteral (LVP) bag. (S-1, N-1, A –1, FN-1, LVP-1)
You will reconstitute a freeze-dried product in a small volume parenteral (SVP) vial using an ampul. Filter the ampul using a filter disk. (S-1, N-1, DF-1, A-1, FV-1)
You will withdraw 4 mL from the previously reconstituted SVP and add it to the LVP used in #4. (Inspect for coring and filter if needed. S-1, N-1)
You will receive an order for 500 mg of ampicillin q 6 hours. (1 g vial of amp – 1, 10 cc vial of NS –1, 20 cc S –1,N-1, 50 cc bag of NS – 1,)
Read the package insert to determine if ampicillin is more stable in NS than D5W.
Possibility of volume expansion, must with draw the whole contents of the vial and divide by 2, to determine the volume that will deliver 500 mg.
